Madam Illness, a 1-hour abstract comic

So, for Thanksgiving, I made a little art.  Thanks to Mike Getsiv's inspiration, I thought I would take a whirl on a 1-hour, 24-page comic.  I did mine digitally.  Otherwise, I followed Mike's rules. The only prep I did was establishing the page size and resolution.  The only post production was making the cover and the back page.  Well, and I had to do some file conversion to save as a pdf.

Some pages are better than others, but in the spirit of the exercise I share them all here.  And yes, they are in the order in which I made them.  Dang, but that hour flew by fast!

I can't think of a better way to spend pre-feast Thanksgiving, though.  Thanks, Mike, for the idea and the pointers.

Happy Thanksgiving!

And, while I'm on the subject, let me remind y'all that piss-take posts that have nothing whatsoever to do with abstract comics will be removed at the discretion of the administrator.

(You can save them for cometscomets, where they belong.)

Just sayin'.

Twentyfourinone

This is a 24-page abstract comic I made in 1 hour (yes, one hour), back in 2008.

I printed a limited run of twenty-four copies which sold out (actually, four of them were trades) at the Portland Zine Symposium.

Abstract Comics: the group portrait

Tom Motley has been posting on his blog his doodles of panel discussions he attended--one of which was the AC panel discussion at MoCCA in September 2009. Follow the link in the image to see Tom's post and get to a larger version of the image.

"Party Crashers" exhibition opening this Friday in Arlington, VA

"Party Crashers: Comic Book Culture Invades the Art World," curated by Jeffry Cudlin and Cynthia Connoly, is opening this Friday at the Arlington Arts Center, in Arlington, VA. The exhibition is partly an Abstract Comics reunion, as four contributors to the book and one who was not in the book but who has been an active poster on this blog are included (though not all of them will be showing abstract pieces): Rosaire Appel, Derik Badman (whose art is featured on the invite), Warren Craghead, Blaise Larmee (who also designed the catalog) and yours truly (who also wrote the introductory essay for the catalog). I don't know exactly what pieces the others will show, but my contribution will include the original art for "Two of the Missing Pages from 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym'" and for the first seven pages of my ongoing project, "Ruins." I will also have two animated digital projection pieces.

The exhibition, I should add, also contains work by non-abstract cartoonists such as Jim Rugg, Gabrielle Bell, Jeffrey Brown, Dash Shaw, and many others. Of particular interest to the readers of this blog will be the work of Joshua Cotter, whose amazing recent book, "Driven by Lemons," is at least half-abstract.

The opening reception is 7-9 on Friday (members' preview at 6). I'll be attending and, if you're in the DC area, I hope to see you there! (Address, directions, etc., are in the link above.)
